This deck had several problems. A very heavy wheelbarrow cracked several boards as well as an old joist under the deck. Also, the pine decking boards had swollen in the weather and were bulging out, popping the nails. To remediate these problems I

  1. replaced the broken joist with H3 treated 90 x 45mm construction grade timber
  2. relaid each deck board again with a 3mm expansion gap using stainless steel screws.
